Spotify

An addition to Spotify’s existing layout to simplify searching for music

Overview

Spotify is the top music streaming service in the US, with over 180 million subscribers. With technology constantly evolving, there are always opportunities to improve the efficiency of the platform.

Adding new ways to search for items can simplify a song listener’s journey on Spotify’s app.

Goal ➡️ Help listeners find their desired song

Adjust the current smartphone app design to include more search options. The product would incorporate song lyrics and voice recognition to help listeners find their desired song.

Interviewing music listeners

After I assessed the successes and pain points of Spotify’s competitors, I then concluded that our target audience is music listeners 18 to 34 years old. I proceeded to conduct user interviews to gather more quantitative and qualitative research. My target goals during these 1-on-1 interviews were:

  1. Find out what the current problems are when searching for songs

  2. Find out how users are searching for new songs

I interviewed 5 participants ranging from ages 18 to 26, and came to these conclusions:

  • All participants showed interest in a lyrics search feature to eliminate searching separately on other platforms (ex. Google)

  • They appreciate Spotify the most for its simple, easy to use navigation

Creating a scenario

In order to visualize how a listener would use the feature, I created a storyboard to display some of the general flow that a use would go through. Here, an individual would think of a song that they forgot the title to, and have two different options on the Spotify app.

Option #1: Search through song lyrics

Option #2: Search by singing/humming
